High potential and gifted education
Nuwarra Public School follows the NSW Department of Education’s High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy. Our programs identify and support giftedness in many areas—academic, creative, physical, and social—reflecting the Department’s focus on the whole child. By nurturing talents across these domains, we promote balanced growth, helping students excel not only in school but also in creativity, physical skills, and social abilities. This approach prepares students for lifelong success, wellbeing, and personal fulfilment beyond the classroom.
At Nuwarra we focus on four key domains:
Creative Domain
Your school gives students chances to think in new ways and express themselves through art, music, writing, or problem-solving. This helps students be original and use their imagination.
Intellectual Domain
Students get challenging lessons that make them think deeply and learn more advanced ideas. This helps them grow in knowledge and skills across all subjects.
Physical Domain
Besides learning, your school also supports students’ physical health and skills. This includes sports and activities that help them stay fit, improve coordination, and enjoy physical challenges.
Social-Emotional Domain
It’s important to help students feel good about themselves and get along well with others. Your school teaches skills like coping with challenges, understanding feelings, and building good friendships.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
In our classroom
At Nuwarra Public School, supporting HPGE is part of our daily work. Many of our students have high potential, and we are committed to helping them develop their abilities to their fullest.
Teachers recognise each student’s learning needs and use research-based teaching methods to challenge and stretch their skills. We offer different learning options such as enrichment activities, extension programs, and opportunities for acceleration.
Our classrooms provide a welcoming environment where students feel they belong and are encouraged to take risks, be creative, and work together.
We use flexible groupings, allow students to take leadership roles, and give feedback that focuses on strengths, clear goals, and self-assessment.
Our teachers regularly take part in professional learning to meet the diverse needs of all students, including those with high potential and gifted learners.
Across our school
Every student is unique, so we offer a variety of flexible opportunities to meet their individual interests and needs.
Students build their skills through activities like debating, competitions, critical thinking workshops, and STEM.
We celebrate talents in school musicals and events like Talent Quests, School Spectacular rehearsals, drama, visual arts, music groups, choir, mixed boys and girls aerobics team, with students also taking important roles in tech and production crews.
Leadership is encouraged through SRC, Student Parliament, mentoring, while wellbeing is supported with PBL awards, Berry Street Education, and Therapuppy visits.
High Potential Music group with regular performance opportunities.
Everyday activities encourage curiosity and a sense of belonging, including Open Library at lunch, and Art Club.
Sport is valued too, with opportunities in PSSA sports, team training, coaching, and house competitions that include adapted physical education for all abilities.
Across the state
Our students take part in many statewide programs that help extend and enrich their abilities.
They engage in activities like the Maths Olympiad, Premier’s Spelling Bee, Premier’s Multicultural Public Speaking, Debating, Combined Aboriginal Dance Group and NAIDOC events.
Support from the state and the NSW Department of Education is available for high potential and gifted students, and we assist with entries, preparation, and reflection to ensure each experience contributes to their learning growth.
Debating
Our students actively participate in debating competitions, honing their critical thinking and persuasive communication skills.
Music ensembles
The High Potential Music Group started in 2022, with students focusing on practical and music theory with their selected instrument. Students are selected each year through an audition process and work with Miss CT for one day each week. They practice technique, performance and stage presence.
Multicultural Speaking
Our multicultural public speaking opportunities celebrate diversity by encouraging students to share their unique cultural stories and perspectives with confidence and pride.

Our weekly art group provides a creative space for students to explore various artistic techniques and express themselves through diverse visual art projects.
