Additional learning support

At our school, we ensure every student is ready to learn. We support students with disability and additional learning needs so they can take part in all areas of school life. You do not need a formal diagnosis for your child to receive support in a mainstream class. Support can begin at any stage of school.

Support that fits your child's needs

Some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families to make support plans and adjustments that suits each child’s needs.

Additional learning support can include:

  • teachers and support staff working together with families (and students, if needed)
  • specialist support for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
  • providing tailored programs to help high potential and gifted students with their advanced learning needs
  • small group tutoring to provide targeted literacy and numeracy support for students
  • regular check-ins to review and update the planned supports
  • changes to the classrooms:

    • accessible classrooms
    • assistive technology
    • instructional resources
  • extra guidance, simpler content or different focus during lessons

  • assessment adjustments:

    • more time
    • simpler language
    • breaks during tasks
    • different ways to complete a task (e.g. oral presentations instead of written tasks).

We know when a student needs help when:

  • teachers notice changes in learning or behaviour
  • reviewing assessment results and learning progress
  • parents and carers raise concerns or ask for support.
Adjustments are planned with parents and carers. They are reviewed regularly and changed when needed.  If you think your child may need extra help, contact us.

Support Classes

Support Class - Hearing Impairment

At Nuwarra, we are privileged to be an essential part of the team supporting families on their journey to understand and manage hearing loss. Our Hearing Support Unit comprises five classes, catering to students from 3 years old in our Early Intervention Nursery class through to Year 6. Each class offers innovative, enriching, and inclusive programs specifically designed to support students with a bilateral hearing loss greater than 30dB.

Seven students with their teach made cupcakes.

All K-6 classes are aligned with curriculum-based stages and provide access to age-appropriate curriculum, sporting activities, and social opportunities. Our trained educators create many unique opportunities for students to develop their skills, confidence, and knowledge across various aspects of school, social, and community life. Individualised learning plans are developed to address and support the specific needs of each student.

Our students and staff are integral members of the whole school community, actively participating and valued for their contributions. Students enjoy every academic, social, and sporting opportunity that Nuwarra Public School offers.

To secure a placement in the Hearing Support Unit, your child must have a recent audiogram indicating a bilateral hearing loss over 30dB. Our staff will assist you in completing an Access Request (AR), which is then submitted to an independent placement panel.

While placement specifically at our school cannot be guaranteed, the panel will offer an appropriate placement based on your child’s learning needs and your residential address.

Support Class - Autism

Our Support Unit was established in 2018 and was the first within the Moorebank Community of Schools Network. It consists of 3 classes catering for students from K-6 with diverse additional learning needs within an inclusive and supported environment. Each class has 6-8 students with experienced Special Ed trained Educators and assisted by a School Learning Support Officer.

Our focus is in supporting and encouraging the students together with their parents and therapists to maximise their learning potential including the curriculum, behavioural, communication and social needs. To receive a placement in the Support Unit, your child must have a diagnosis from a Paediatrician stating their eligibility for the program.

The staff will support you in completing an Access Request (AR) which is submitted to an independent placement panel. The panel will offer an appropriate placement for your child based on their learning needs and your address, although a placement specifically at our school is not guaranteed because it depends on availabilities and needs.
